Counselling is a broad term that is usually used to describe a talking therapy. Most counsellors will be trained in one of three main approaches: Person Centred, Psychodynamic, or Cognitive Behavioural. There are hundreds of theories and methods out there, so it is worth checking with your counsellor what approach/s they use and whether that would suit you. Like many counsellors, I am trained in a particular field (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) but am able to borrow techniques, styles and theories from other places. I have used a variety of creative techniques with clients to help explore difficulties from other angles, and have at times simply acted as a sounding board that enables people to work out their difficulties in a place of safety.
